Happy Christmas!

First, Happy New Year!

And now . . .

Happy Christmas!
This is what the living room looked like when I came upstairs Christmas morning.

"Christmas socks are fun!"
My parents made an effort to explain that we call these stockings but I was not convinced.

My stocking had all these LETTERS!

After enjoying my Christmas sock, I created projects on my new computer. A computer of my own? Can you believe it? I love to do "projects" on my parents' computers and now I have one of my own for projects (Projects involve Word documents wherein I type letters and numbers. I love to change the font).

There were also wrapped presents including Alphabet Under Construction! I have been wanting this book ever since I checked it out at the library about six months ago!

And THIS is my stomp rocket! My Uncle Jake and Aunt Karrie sent it and many other great gifts from Virginia Beach. We got to talk to them and see them on skype. You can see them on the computer on the left. And guess who is on the computer on the right? Mimi and pops were on skype, too.

See the rocket on the ceiling fan?

We also got to talk to and see granddaddy and grammy AND Uncle Blake on skype! How amazing to get to see Uncle Blake in Japan on Christmas morning (it was Christmas night for him). Do you see grammy's Santa hat? We were able to see Uncle Steve on skype, too. We were so glad to see our family in Virginia, Tennessee, Alabama, and Japan!

PupPup talked to granddaddy, grammy, and Uncle Blake, too.

I had a wonderful Christmas day!!
It was truly Christmas in the digital age as we were able to see and talk to Virginia, Alabama, Tennessee, and Japan all from our living room in Texas!

A Christmas Treat

Sick boys can still help make a Christmas treat.
Here we are eating chex and discussing the plan.

I feel okay for a little while and then I crash. While feeling pretty good, I helped daddy make "puppy chow." Weird name, right? It is just chex covered with chocolate and peanut butter and then sprinkled with powdered sugar.

Measuring is lots of fun!

Eating is even more FUN!

How about another?

Daddy: "Owen, we said no more right now."
Owen: "I did not eat one."
Daddy: "I have a different idea. I think you ate another one."
Owen: "Maybe."
(Wish I had thought to wipe my mouth.)

Quote of the day

Yesterday, when I was on skype with mimi and pops, I was sneezing and sniffling. I said:

"Mimi, my nose doesn't work!"

I have an ear infection and I am not feeling very good at all. What a bummer! You will remember that I had surgery in March to put tubes in my ears. Well, it is expected that the tubes will fall out and they have! The bad news is we are now back to where we were pre-surgery - in other words, there is always fluid on my ears and so it easily gets infected. More than likely my ENT will want to put tubes in again. I will keep you posted.

Me and Miller

This is Miller!

Miller is a great friend of mine. We have so much fun together!

We like to hang out . . .

and chill . . .

Miller came over to my house today to play. We had a great time. While we were eating lunch, a carrot that I was eating went down the wrong way and then came back - yuck. Momma turned to Miller and said, "I don't think he is sick. I think that was a fluke." A little later, I turned to Miller and said, "Remember what happened with that carrot - it was a flute."

Maddox Middle School’s Brenda Stepp ascended to the rank of teacher of the year recently.

The math instructor was chosen as the school’s top teacher of 2010 by a selection committee of her peers, parents and pupils at the Jasper city school.

The 54-year-old pre-algebra instructor said she was “surprised and astounded” to receive the recognition.

“I thought ‘what?’ I thought it was some mistake” said Stepp, who started her teaching career more than 14 years ago.

She started teaching at Maddox Middle School in 2003.

Although Stepp said she felt “very honored to be chosen for the award,” she says receiving accolades is not at the top of her to-do list.

“I don’t want any praise and glory or anything like that for it (teaching) because that’s not what I’m there for,” Stepp said. “I’m there to teach them and help educate them.” Stepp added she is also at the school to serve as a mentor to her students.

Patsy Stricklin, the school’s principal who served on the teacher of the year selection committee, could not be reached for comment by deadline on Thursday.

Stepp, a native of West Virginia, studied math education at the University of Virginia College at Wise. However, her first exposure to the profession came about when she was involved in the PTA when her sons, Nick and Jake, were in elementary school.

She said working with other children through the Parent-Teacher Association made her think she would enjoy working with kids on a full-time basis.

Stepp came to Alabama in 1990 when her husband, Sam, received a work transfer.

As the top teacher at Maddox Middle School, Stepp will have her portrait displayed in the meeting room at Jasper City School’s central office where the Jasper City Board of Education holds its monthly meetings. The win also puts her in the hunt for the city school system’s secondary teacher of the year.

“We’ll have an elementary and a secondary teacher who will go on to represent the system at the regional level and state,” said school system superintendent Robert Sparkman.

Facing off against Stepp will be Teresa Kitchens, Walker High School’s teacher of the year.

Competing for the school district’s elementary teacher of the year is Meagan Fields from Memorial Park, Dionne Nelson from T.R. Simmons and Melanie Turner, an instructor at West Jasper.

Sparkman said all five teachers of the year will be recognized at the school board’s January meeting where they will receive certificates recognizing their accolades.

“We’ve got some goods ones,” Sparkman said about the winners. “These are all sound, strong teachers.”

Sparkman said performance in the classroom is not the only criterion considered when determining the teacher of the year.

“There’s a lot of things involved in this,” Sparkman said about the award in which community involvement is among the matters considered. “It takes a lot into account.”

Stepp replaced Greg Tinker, the 2009 teacher of the year at MMS. Tinker was also the school system’s secondary teacher of the year.

When she’s not teaching or grading tests, Stepp enjoys attending First United Methodist Church on Sundays and Crimson Tide football games on Saturdays.

“Usually during football season we can be found in Tuscaloosa,” said Stepp.

Stepp said the thing she most enjoys about being a teacher is the interaction she has with her students. At times, she said her lessons involve more than math.

“Just because you’re teaching them math doesn’t mean it’s strictly math,” she said. “Sometimes everyday life lessons are the best lessons that they learn from a teacher.”

A Fun Saturday

Two boys, a green chair, and a funny joke . . .

This is my friend, Sterling. He is four months younger than I am and we have been friends for a long time.

Here we are in August of 2008!

We were small then but we are a lot bigger now! Momma and I went to Sterling's house and then Sterling got to come with us in our car! I was so excited about having Sterling's car seat and Sterling in our car! We went to the park and then back to our house to play. We had so much fun!

After taking Sterling home and a nap, I put my necklaces on and we headed to Discovery Green Park.

We met our friends there. Here is a picture of me jumping with the help of my friend, Ann.

They have iceskating at Discovery Green. It was a very warm day here in sunny Houston - it was funny to see people in shorts iceskating.

It was also funny and not a little amazing to see Santa iceskating. Cool, no?

I loved to watch the skaters!

My fun day just kept going . . . we went to Aunt Nettie and Uncle Bill's house for dinner and Lights in the Heights. The big boys were also invited! Here I am with Wilson and Elliot!

And here's everyone - well not Aunt Nettie as she is taking the picture - but everyone else! We had a lot of fun looking at the lights!

Big smile

Here I am playing at my friend's Mac, Virginia, Lynn, and Grant's house. They live near me and have such a great yard. I love playing in the yard and porch and momma loves taking pictures of me there.

Hello!

Friends

This is my friend Virginia. I love her and her brother, Mac. This morning I said, "When I am big like Mac, I will drink coffee and momma and me and Mac and Virginia will go to Schlitterbahn."

This is my new friend. He is a tiger puppet and we love to ROAR together!

I have lots of friends that I sleep with at night. I line them up to listen to my bedtime story. I say, "Okay kids, it is time to listen to this story." I call them my friends unless it is story time.

The Egg

Owen: "This is an egg."
Momma: "Wow! What is inside?"
Owen: "Inside this black egg is a yellow chick!"
Momma: "When will it hatch?"
Owen: "February 4."
Momma: "Do you need to sit on it until it hatches?"
Owen: "Well, no. Do you?"

Typing on the computer:
Owen: "I am making the alphabet!"
Momma: "Wow. Great! Oh and now you are making dashes."
Owen: "These are not dashes. These are minuses."
